Heat treatment for fleas

Most of a flea problem is not on the pet. Eggs, larvae and cocooned pupae sit in carpets, bedding and furniture, and insecticides do not kill the eggs or pupae. Heat does. A whole-home flea heat treatment for a two-bed flat was published at £860 plus VAT by one firm in 2026, against roughly £80 to £220 for a standard spray.

When heat is worth considering for fleas

  • You have treated the pet and sprayed the home, and the fleas keep coming back.
  • Someone in the home cannot be around insecticides, or you would rather avoid them.
  • You have moved into a home where a previous owner's pets left fleas behind.
  • The problem is in a let or a holiday home that has to be ready quickly.
  • There are also bed bugs, and one heat treatment can deal with both.

What a good quote includes

Ask for these six points in writing. Two quotes that cover them can be compared line by line.

  1. Which rooms, and why

Fleas gather where pets sleep and rest. Ask which rooms are included and whether the car or a pet's bed outside the house needs dealing with too.

  2. Heat or spray, or both

Ask what the firm recommends and why. Heat reaches every stage; a residual spray can protect against fleas hatching later.

  3. Your pets

Pets must be out of the home during treatment, and treated by your vet's advice. Ask the firm when they can come back.

  4. Preparation

What to wash, what to vacuum, and what to remove. Fish tanks, plants, medicines and aerosols should not stay in a heated room.

  5. A temperature record

Sensor readings show the heat reached the carpets and furniture, not only the air in the middle of the room.

  6. Follow-up

Pupae can take time to hatch. Ask whether a follow-up visit is included and what happens if you still see fleas after a few weeks.

How a flea heat treatment usually works

  1. Survey and plan

The specialist confirms it is fleas, looks at where pets spend their time, and prices the rooms.

  2. Preparation

Pets go to a friend or a kennel for the day, bedding is washed hot, and heat-sensitive items come out.

  3. Heat treatment

The rooms are heated and held at temperature, with sensors in the carpets and furniture.

  4. Afterwards

The rooms cool, you vacuum as advised, and the pet carries on with the flea treatment your vet recommends.

Questions people ask

Does heat treatment kill flea eggs?

Yes. The British Pest Control Association says extreme heat kills fleas at every stage, while insecticides do not kill eggs or pupae.

Where do fleas live in a home?

The BPCA says about 95% of a flea population is eggs, larvae and pupae in the home rather than adult fleas on the pet, mostly in carpets, pet bedding and soft furnishings.

Do I still need to treat my pet?

Yes. A heat treatment clears the home, but a pet with fleas will bring them straight back. Ask your vet which product suits your animal.

How much does flea heat treatment cost?

Few firms publish prices. One published £860 plus VAT for a two-bed flat in 2026, which is about £1,030 with VAT. Spray treatments are much cheaper at roughly £80 to £220, so heat tends to be used when spraying has not worked.

Can one heat treatment deal with bed bugs and fleas?

It can, as the same temperatures kill both. Mention both on the form so the specialist can plan for it. See what temperature kills bed bugs.
